THE LOCATION: When I was invited to attend the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International Honors gala I was intrigued to see how a nonprofit dedicated to increased ethical dialogue in technology, defense and intelligence would address issues that are embedded in politics, economic verbiage, and our overall sense of national insecurity.
Don’t get me wrong, I am as much of an international affairs realist as the next well educated Joe, I just wanted to see on which side of common sense this event would fall.
Congressman Michael J. Rogers (R-MI), LTG Susan Lawrence, USA (Ret.) and Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen Former NATO Secretary General were just a few of the individuals honored that night for their bastion-like leadership. Hearing of their experiences was like seeing uniquely facetted prisms held up to the light of history. While some of the night’s speeches gave the impression of romanticizing defense and military issues, the display of military traditions and respect was overwhelming and humbling.
Also, this was by far one of the best dressed rooms I had ever been in in all my years in Washington, DC. Just imagine a sea of crisp formal and military wear, chicly dressed dates, foreign accents, and fine table settings. My date for the night, a tux donning Navy man, was no exception.
The gala was held at Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium.
THE LOOK: If you want a look that says “I AM gala fashion” and “I am concerned with my level of body heat right now” then this Michael Kors LBD (long black dress) was made for you. When I found this dress years ago at a boutique in Adams Morgan, I fell in love with the plunging neckline and the knot accent. The accessories for this gala fashion look needed to hold their own while letting the dress shine. The Black Friday born Nine West reptile embossed leather peep-toe pumps are a perfect contrasted connection to the shiny reptile embossed Liz Claiborne metal chain clutch. The limestone beaded earrings are treasured vintage finds from my mother’s closet. And the cat eye eyeliner and Victoria’s Secret red lipstick in Cerise, well, those go with just about everything.
