THE LOCATION: Life is one long fashion statement. That sometimes means waiting years to wear a special statement piece. I found this exquisite stick barrette at a roadside shop in a small town of Hopkins, Belize in 2012. This barrette has come a long way from the beaten paths of Belize to its first outing this month at the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for a concert with Pink Martini and the Von Trapps. As you look through the images, enjoy this piece as I do, interspersed with memories of adventure, beauty and wonder.
THE LOOK: Wouldn’t it be easy to take a regal accessory and top it off with a ball gown? But where’s the fun in that? This sheer black sweetheart mini-dress perfectly contrasts with the femininity of a beaded stick barrette. While I’ll indulge in traditionally feminine colors and textures, you’ll never catch me wearing head-to-toe pink. I just don’t see style as a medium to advertise the obvious (like shorts so short that the pockets hang out). But I know others would disagree!
These black booties from Zara have become a wardrobe go-to. The season changes here are daily. The weather, like most other things synonymous with this city, is gritty at its worst and gritty its best. In case I do get caught in a colossal fall rainstorm, I like to think my shiny pink Coach bag can serve as reflective safety gear as I hop around town post-concert.
